Perceptual Motor Programme (PMP)
Our Perceptual Motor Programme for Prep aims to develop a child’s perceptions and understanding of self and of his or her world around them. At Algester this is done through movement and motor experiences that get progressively more challenging for students.
It is more than just a Physical Education programme; rather it has used facets of music, fitness, dance, gymnastics and strength activities to develop the children.
Much of the focus in PMP is the development of Gross Motor Skills, providing students with opportunities to master their body so that movement through the environment around them is done with control and confidence.
To compliment this, the use of Fine Motor Skill activities throughout the programme is aimed at providing students the skills of manipulating objects within the environment they move through.
We have four sporting houses:
At the time of enrolment, each student is placed into a sporting house. Students who have siblings at school will be placed into the same house as their sibling. Prep students [without Algester Primary siblings] will be advised in Term 1 which sporting house they belong to. Students are required to wear their team colour T-shirt on sports days. Coloured sports shirts are available from the Uniform Shop.
Students in Prep to Year 6 participate in the school cross country at the end of Term 1, Students who are 10 or older have the opportunity to represent the school at the District Cross Country competition.
There are two school sports days for Athletics – one for the Junior School Prep to Year 3 and separate sports days for the Upper School Years 4 – 6. The Junior Sports Day has an emphasis on participation and skill development. The Senior Sports Days comprise a day for the track and field finals for High Jump, Long Jump, Discus, Shot-Put, 100m and 200m races and relays. The other day is for participation for all students in track and field events. Students, who are 10 years or older, have the opportunity to represent the school at the District Athletics Carnival.
Interschool Sports (Gala Days)
Students in Years 5 to 6 are invited to take part in the Interschool Sporting Competition called Gala Day on selected Fridays throughout the year. Students are invited to try out for various sports, depending on the season, eg. Netball, Cricket, Touch Football, AFL, Soccer, Basketball, T-ball and Softball etc. These teams compete against other schools in our District on the Gala Days. Students will be given an Algester Sporting Shirt to loan for these days. There is a sporting fee involved to cover the costs incurred and will be outlined in a note sent home early Term 1.
For those who do not represent a sporting team, there is an “at school” program where students rotate through many different sporting activities, eg. Lawn Bowls, Basketball, AFL and Badminton.
Students in Years 2, 3 and 4 have the opportunity to participate in a
swimming program in term 4. The program takes place at AJ’s Sports Club and is run by their qualified learn to swim instructors over 8 consecutive days. There is a reasonable fee involved for students to participate in this program (a note will be sent home early in Term 4 with the exact amount). Students are assessed on their first lesson and are then placed into ability groups to help them further develop their swimming skills, from water safety to stoke development. Students will require: swimming attire, swimming shirt, thongs, towel, goggles and swimming cap.
